Pronunciation and orthography

In Slovak, the accent is almost always on the first syllable of the word. Exceptions occur mainly around monosyllables.

  • slovenský jazyk
  • moja rodina
  • mama a otec
  • Učím sa slovenčinu.
  • kreslil som si
  • Dal som jej knihu.

NOTE: The prolongation mark (diacritical mark in letters //á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ĺ, ŕ//) does not designate that that the syllable should be emphasised! The prolongation mark only means that the syllable should be pronounced twice as long as a short syllable. Example:

    mama /mama/
    ja mám /ja ma:m/

The accent is not marked in Slovak words.
